The next morning, Evelyn is the first to wake up. She slowly walks down the stairs, her pajama pants drag against the beige carpet. She admires the weather outside the front door window.
"What a beautiful morning,” she says to herself. It is 8:00 A.M., she realizes after looking at the kitchen clock. She goes outside to get the daily paper as she does every other Saturday morning. The sun is just rising, and there is a cold breeze brushing through her long brown hair. She closes the door with a thud just as her father is walking down the stairs. She runs up to him and gives him a big bear hug.
"Hi, Daddy! I didn't see you last night."
"Yeah, I got home late."
“Is mom awake?" she asks not knowing that her mother went to Florida.
“Evelyn, Sweetheart, your mother had to go to a con¬ference in Florida. She will not be back for two weeks. I have not told your brother and sister yet."
Her brother and sister are usually considered by many the perfect children because of their multiple talents, good looks, athletic abilities, and academic excellence. The one person that understands her besides her friends -Victoria Preston and Derek Gibson- is her father.
“I’m going to McDonalds' to get breakfast. Want anything?"
"No, thanks"
“If your brother and sister wake up before I'm back, please tell them about Mom. Be back soon."
Robert walks out the front door. A while later, Evelyn's brother, Jonathan walks down the stairs.
"Who just left?"
Evelyn answers and explains everything to him as she heard from her father.
"Do you want your eggs?" Evelyn asks her sister, Tiffany, later in the morning after Robert returns. They were eating scrabbled eggs, hash browns, and croissants at the dining room table.
“Still hungry?” her father asks after seeing that she ate everything off her plate. He did not look surprised because he knows his youngest daughter loves to eat especially breakfast.
"No, you can have them,” Tiffany says as if it was a routine answer.
Evelyn barely gets the chance to say thank you before stuffing the eggs in her mouth. When she finishes, she throws the plate in the sink and runs up stairs to her room.
