"Changes"

Old Stuff

"I can't believe you're leaving me!" Samantha, my best friend said. We were lying on my bed in my room after school. Sam was joking, of course. Sam was the kind of person you could tell anything to and she would always understand. I have been friends with her for over eleven years. I met her through friends of my parents when I was just four years old. We have many things in common. We both have the biggest crush on Brad Pitt. But really who doesn't, right? Sam and I also obsess over the quarterback of the football team at our school. As does every other girl in our school.

"Charleston isn't that far away, I guess. We can still do stuff together, right?" she asked.

"Of course."

Summerville, South Carolina is all I've ever known. I have been going to Wilson Academy for ten years. I am in ninth grade now. The problem with a private school is that you have to get along with everyone or you're basically going to be miserable. My dad just got a job at the Charleston Airport, so we had to move. It's two hours away from Summerville. That means I can still see most of my friends, but like I said, I have known these people in my school practically my entire life. It's a big change so of course I'm worried and afraid.

"Melissa Johnson."

My friend, Nicole tapped me on the shoulder.

"Oh, here." I was in a complete daze as my English teacher, Mrs. Lawrence, called attendance.

Nicole asked me, "What's been wrong with you these past days? Are you still worried about moving?" Nicole is also one of my good friends. I'm not as close to her as I am to Sam, but I have known her for nine and a half years.

"Yeah, I've never moved to a new neighborhood before. Let alone a new zip code!" I have lived in the same house since I was two if you can imagine that.

"Well, you shouldn't worry, because everything is gonna be alright. You just wait and see."

That night at home, I was eating dinner with my parents. My father said, "I'm sorry, Melissa, but you won't be able to go to school tomorrow. We're moving tomorrow morning."

"What? We can't! I haven't even said goodbye to any of my friends!" I yelled angrily.

"We know, Melissa. There's just no time. The airport needs your father at work this weekend, so we have to start moving right away," my mother said.

"This is unbelievable!" I stormed out of the dining room and went upstairs to my room. I dialed Sam's number to tell her what happened.

"Hello?" Sam answered the phone.

"Oh, my God, Sam! My parents won't let me go to school tomorrow!" I shouted.

"Calm down, Mel." Sam was always so understanding. "What do you mean?"

"My parents told me that we have to move tomorrow so I can't even go to school!"

"Don't worry. I'm going over there right now." Sam said and hung up. She came to my house. And being the awesome friend she always was, she let me cry on her shoulder. When she left, I called a few more friends including Nicole to tell them the news.

The next day, my mom woke me up at 6:00 a.m. to help load the car. On the trip there, I cried silently in the backseat. My parents looked back occasionally, but didn't say anything. They didn't need to.

The following Monday was my first day at Charleston High School. I was very nervous. I walked into my first period. There were so many unfamiliar faces. They all looked at me oddly, like they had never seen a student transfer in the middle of the year. After class, I went looking for my locker.

"Hey!" a stranger said behind me. I turned around. "I'm Stephanie."

"Hi, I'm Melissa." I had seen her somewhere before. "Were you in my first period, history?" I asked hesitantly.

"Yes, I was. So, you're new here, right?"

"Yeah. Urn, do you know where locker #27 is?" I asked her.

"Uh Huh. I'll walk you to it." she replied. I made my first friend. Maybe this school wasn't going to be that bad.

My second day was good. Stephanie introduced me to a few of her friends: Katie, Christina, and Vanessa. There was now only a week and a half left before Christmas vacation.

Sam and I planned to spend every day together over the break.

I invited her to the Christmas festival at my school. I introduced her to Stephanie and her friends. That night she asked me, "So was it as bad as you thought it would be?"

"Surprisingly, no. I've made some friends and my teachers are pretty cool."

"I told you that you had nothing to worry about. So, have you met any cute guys?"

I laughed. "Well..."

When I went back to school in the new year, I tried to make the best out of it. I made more friends and I even met a guy, Josh. We've been going out for two months now. I can honestly say that I am happier here than I was in my old school. Even though I miss Wilson Academy terribly, it was time for a change.

There's something I realized after living here for three months. Change doesn't always have to be such a bad thing. It could be the best thing to ever happen to you!
