The Prodigal Child (Rewrite of Prodigal)

It all began when I decided I wanted to be independent;

I wanted my due inheritance for being Your descendent:

“Father, I no longer wish to be considered Your offspring.”

Oh, how my words of farewell left a heartbreaking sting.

I deserted Your kingdom and fled towards foreign land

where I would not have to live under Your command.

I recklessly squandered all until I was left empty-handed.

In these barren wastelands, I was famished and stranded.

Since I had exhausted all the resources you so faithfully gave,

The only alternative I now had was to become Your slave.

I ran back to You in hopes of receiving a second chance.

And when I returned, I fell to my knees in repentance.

We entered heaven’s gates where you hosted a celebration

So we could commemorate my heart’s transformation.

For I had found no purpose no matter how far I roamed,

Yet, into Your outstretched arms, I was welcomed home.
