It’s always warm in the Dominican Republic and the outdoor cafés are a blast. I was sitting with a couple friends at an outdoor café in Puerto Plata. A young woman was walking down the street. She stops to flirt with us a little. We flirt back a little. She laughs and walks along.
Few flirty moments
kind words, innocent chatter
and gentle smiles
The waiter starts to question us. “Oh you like the dark women?” The woman appeared to be Haitian. I just shrugged and said, “I find all kinds of women beautiful.” I appeared to be taken aback. I questioned what he had against the Haitians. I was like, “Man, Dominicans and Haitians hate each other more than Americans and Mexicans hate each other.”
He went on to explain that the Haitians came into his country illegally and took away jobs and didn’t speak the language. I had to smile at his comments although I was biting down hard on my tongue.
Illicit workers
Linguistic issues aside
They’re just not the same
I was just sighing. It seems that anytime a poorer country borders on a country better off that you are likely to have issues with immigration—legal or otherwise. It is a great tragedy in our world. We really do need to work on making the world a better place for everyone. I guess I’m naïve because I still think it can be done.
Moments to reflect
We have families to feed
and we want what’s ours
sometimes we truly forget
we’re not alone in this world
