History will teach us nothing

because we’re too dumb to learn

we’re too superior

we’re different than them

from back when

It can’t happen to us

We’re too good

and our smugness

lays our weakness

the arrogance of a fool

unable to scope the magnitude

of the situation

too dense to admit it

not wise enough

to let go of the ego

and see it with clarity

with newborn virgin eyes

but that is humility

and we run from it

like it were a leper

afraid of the gifts it bears

History will teach us nothing

because we do not

want to take that honest look

and see what we were

and until we see what we were

we can’t know what we are

or set the right tone

to better what we will become
