INNOCENT ENOUGH

Innocent enough

we were alone

with the ran outside

and we just laughed

though the child is gone

and now all I do

is wallow in drink

and hide

in a haze of smoke

Yeah, I wanted

to know you better

but it weren’t to be

and I suppose

it isn’t anyone’s fault

it happened that way

and the rain washes

down the gutter

along with my vision

and cliché addled dreams

The ground was wet

and the air was miserable

and all I could do

was think of failure

and accept it at face

yet still refuse to believe

in its permanence
