you don't have to acknowledge
you have enjoyed this
or even that you have seen
the words before you
why would you change now that you have
have put the distance between us
before i knew you read the chap books
that were creased and slid into your apartment
or left in your hotel room with candies
then, unlike now
i thought they were friendly
little interludes like a kiss on
the steps of a town hall
kisses that gave little thought
to the wet snow outside or
your traveling companion
calling a taxi
only now, as you read this
there are no metaphors of tongues
dancing to chamber music
of sign language and braille
and i know it is only on your work computer
that the words languish in desire for you
under the distracted gaze of your
blue eyes of endless excitement
