I was the damn drunk,

damn drug taking 

underachieving, unambitious ne’er do well

going nowhere

and getting there fast

but I managed

to pull a Bukowski

and land a cushy government gig.

I can earn a few bucks to live

and be a marginally,

respectable citizen—

and no one will be

wiser to the con.
