Eating at a restaurant
in the hotel in Moyogalpa
on La Isla de Ometepe
on Lake Nicaragua.
Wanting to try something local
and questioning if there’s
any local fish I should try.
They offer tilapia on the menu.
I push for something local
and they explain some history.
A German couple had
a tilapia farm on the lake
and some of the tilapia escaped
and multiplied.
The tilapia were so aggressive
and apparently very hungry
that they killed off the local fish.
Hence, the exotic local fish
I’m eating in Ometepe is tilapia.
It’s an interesting lesson
on not introducing flora and fauna
to a strange location.
Leave it to the German tilapia farmers.
They do it every time.
