Believe

I realize

that

you’re all sharp edges

and rough lines

and that we can’t tie everything up in

pretty paper

but

…Can’t we try?

Reality stands out

like a cheap neon light –

harsh

unwelcoming

as I play poker

downstairs

with the rest of your friends

and I watch

the clubs take it to my hearts.

Take my heart, love –

you’ll live twice as long.

Cheat, and then

swear

you never will.

I’ll believe you.
