Footsteps

I waited by the water,

And let my eyes drift over,

A scene soon to become my burial,

And a home to all my lies,

My fingers trace over,

The footsteps in the sand,

That were once so much bigger than my own,

As I remember how you carried me,

Atop your shoulders,

As the world passed me by,

It was only you and I,

Everything was perfect in our minds,

But that is because we perceived it that way.

I walk on the water,

Letting my mind soar,

Over this once vast ocean,

Now at the center of my heart,

My eyes pass over,

The footsteps in the sand,

As I remember how we wasted hours,

Watching cloud shapes go by,

It was only you and I,

Until the day that the sea took you from me,

It seemed like only yesterday.

I turned away from the water,

Letting tears fill up my eyes,

As I wandered down the sandbank,

And buried my toes beneath each grain,

All memories, each scar holds a secret,

To a mysterious past, soon forgotten,

By the hand that spills my own blood,

But I’ll wait for you, alone,

Along the shores of another world,

As I stand gracefully in your footsteps,

That are printed in the sand,

They are still so much bigger than my own...
