My old friend Crystal

They called you poison.

I called you peace.

We did everything together.

We lost weight together and stayed up late.

We supported each other in ways no one understands.

You never judged me.

We wrote poems together.

You taught me to draw in the moment.

You promised silence
when my mind screamed.

You promised strength
when I was too weak to stand.

We embraced every moment.

The early morning fixes,

The afternoon rush.

Late night mischief.

You slipped into my shaking hands,

And Piece by piece
you carved away the woman
I was born to become.

You whispered, "Just one more."

And I believed you.

I stopped recognizing
the stranger in the mirror.

Empty promises were soon to be found.

A heartbeat that wondered
whether tomorrow was worth meeting.

I reached for you.

Not because I loved you,

Because I didn't know how to live without you.

You became my closest companion,
my loudest lie,
my cruelest comfort.

You convinced me that I needed you to be able to function.

No flashing lights.

No grand goodbye.

Just a quiet moment
where I realized

I was dying inside

Long before death
had come to claim me.

I had to let you go so I could survive.

Not because it was easy.

Because somewhere beneath the wreckage,

the little girl inside me

still wanted to live.

Some days the memories return.

Your voice still echoes,

But I know you now.

You're not my friend.

You never were.

You were the storm

pretending to be shelter.

And every sunrise I wake to,

every breath I take,

is proof that I survived

the friend who almost buried me.
