Made by nothing but wood and wicker was my grandma’s rocking chair, for hours you would see her leaning back and forth, on the sunny days of summer she would take her rocking chair and enjoy the afternoon outside, just there watching us play and taking care of her young grandchildren, and when the winter hit the town she would take her chair back in and repeat the same drill as in the summer time, she could go for hours just sitting there relaxing, or at least that is what I think she did, I have never had the chance to ask her what she actually did there, maybe that moment she used to think about life and the great moments she had on her youth, or just maybe she sat there because it was a way of recalling her dad, my great grandfather, because I remember her telling us that the pair of rocking chairs she had where made by him. It was a lovely chair indeed I remember I use to sit there and relax when I was a little boy, as we all grew up we could see the same rocking chairs, sitting by the porch they where. Every day and every night, sometimes they were just accumulating dust, they would be there, and it was something you could count on when going to grandmas. Her blackish short hair, and the wrinkles on her face would show an exhausting life, one of the many stories she has told me involve those rocking chairs, she also use to take care of my aunts and uncles over there as she waited for the sun to hide, and also waited for it to be dinner time so she would go inside and prepare dinner for her kids and my grandpa that arrived home from work around seven p.m. By now, I can probably understand why she loved that chair, there was nothing special with it, it did not fly, it was not a designer’s chair, and certainly it was not an invention of her own, but she would recur to that chair in times of despair, anxiety, anger, joy, and many other feelings she could be passing through that is what made the rocking chair special, she is a strong woman that has beat cancer not once but twice, she is a story that many writers would love to write about, her will and joy would bring the best out of every moment, and that rocking chair is always going to be there for us to enjoy and think of her when she passes away.
