THANK YOU!

Thank you so much for your smile,

Oh, but look what you have done,

In your own way from behind the veil,

Shattered my trust before every one.

Borrowing I came from God above,

The pain that love brings with it,

But now even that has been made,

A thing common with every one.

I found two glowing embers,

In the Hands of the One who made me,

With one he fashioned my heart,

With the other my loved one.

Grateful I am oft to my sense of ignorance,

Ah, the times I have been alone,

In the midst of every one.

By resisting I have borne,

The stabs and scorns of fate and life,

Many were the sorrows that pierced,

Leaving me bleeding like a knife.

Author's Notes/Comments:

This is a translation of a famous Urdu ghazal. It has been sung beautifully by the late Kundan Lal Saigal. Saigal's rendition, more than the poem, inspired me to translate the beautiful sentiments.
