Through long and tedious paths I have come,
In search of the Truth that is only One,
Even the fabled "water of life" I disdained,
In my longing to be with the Eternal One.
Many saints and savants on the way I met,
And jokers and jugglers who laughed and said:
"Here is someone at whom even we can laugh,
Here is a pilgrim on whom we see regret."
Then came some maidens, very white and fair,
Fresh and ravishing like creamy milk,
For a while they bewitched me with their charms,
But I resisted then and they too did flee.
Now I am at the point where worlds meet,
Tired but hopeful, at God's great seat,
I find so much tranquility here
For now my sojourn seems complete.
O my loving Lord God Allah,
I long to see You as You are
You invited me to Your blessed House*
So let me not stray away far.
