TO A CANDLE

O candle! Tell me how you burn,

What is it that makes you glow,

A formula of the wax and flame,

Or a miracle of God's great love?

O candle! You fight the darkness

And with you I too

Ward of loneliness

It is love divine

Creating in us both

The flame that shines

It's yours and mine

Giving company

For your urge and my rhymes.

It is not

How the scientist defines

It is a small display

Proving to those

Who have eyes

That can see clearly

That all light is

But God's mercy.

Author's Notes/Comments:

It was a quiet night of May 1983. I was in one of those moods where poetic flights are experienced by the soul. There was a power failure and everything was wrapped in black...save the room where I had lit a candle. Almost, at once, inspiration took over my faculties and this poem was the result. All praise to God Almighty.
