EVENING THOUGHTS

Evening comes as a guest,

To a dim party,

Darkness looms in the distance.

Memories dance like fireflies,

The past takes control,

Of how I feel and reflect.

Like Gray's classic Elegy*,

I am all alone,

Friends, beloved, no one around.

In my days of fleeting youth,

I had all of them,

Now only yore's shadows haunt.

I am left with my sad heart,

And a sadder mind,

Hushing me to a deep sleep.

Why is the present a dream,

Sometimes a nighmare,

Why do I feel unfulfilled?

Turning to God is a relief,
He knows my sadness,

Otherwise there's emptiness.
