Sleepwalking
By: Emilio Sa
It all started 3 weeks ago. I don’t know what could possibly be the thing that triggered this… thing. What started off as a simple guy sleep walking, turned out to lead to one of the greatest moments of my life, and I can’t even remember it. For the past couple weeks, I’ve been sleep walking and I can’t remember a thing that has happened in those nights. The first time it happened, or the first time someone saw me, was exactly 2 weeks and 4 days ago, my parents caught me grabbing some stuff from the kitchen, they told me I was taking some milk out of the fridge and that I was about to eat a lettuce. A freaking lettuce!!! Why would I grab a lettuce at 4 in the morning? Well, that’s something we will never know. Anyways, the days went by and nothing happened, or at least no one caught me doing anything stupid until one week later, when my best friend Jacob spent the night at my place after going bowling with my friends. He told me I started talking non-sense and then tried to grab the phone to call 911. I guess I was having a nightmare but then again, we will never know. It has been one week since that, and I thought it was all over until today when Isabelle told me she wanted to have a chat with me. Oh, Isabelle… she is the most beautiful girl in my school and happens to be my neighbor ever since I moved to L.A four years ago. I liked her very much, but so did all the other guys from my grade. I was nervous because I didn’t know what this was about, maybe she just wanted a ride home after school. Who knew? When the bell rang, I went out of the classroom, straight to my locker and there she was, waiting for me like she had something important to tell me. I approached her.
“So, about last night” she said shyly.
“About last night?” I said. What did I do last night?
“Yeah, you know, about the things you said to me when you came over” she said.
“The things I said to you? When I came over?” I repeated nervously.
I didn’t know what was going on. Did I sleep walk again without noticing? What stupid thing did I do this time?
“Yeah, about you, liking m-.” I interrupted her quickly before she could finish.
“Stop! I need to go to the restroom, please excuse me” and I ran as fast as I could.
I got into my mom’s car and left without saying a word. I spent the whole day thinking about it. I called her a couple times but hung up before she could answer. I was freaking out; I didn’t know how to handle this. The time went by, and after hours of thinking I decided to go to her house and finally get this over with. I walked across the street, my heart was beating so fast. I approached her window and stood there for a minute or two. After my heart finally slowed down a little I decided to knock. I knocked three times just to be sure she could hear. She opened her window.
“Hi” I said “I’m sorry for leaving you hanging today at school.”
She stood there, without making a sound.
“Look, I’m really sorry I’m never like that, I didn’t mean to be rude. Do you think, maybe, we can have our pending talk?
“I like you too!” She said all of a sudden.
I stood there, shocked. I couldn’t believe my ears.
“You like me? Like, like me?”
“Yes, I really like you. I’ve been waiting for you to say something or ask me out or anything and finally yesterday you told me that you liked me and left; and you have been avoiding me ever since then.”
I was about to tell her about what had been going on the past few weeks and all about the sleep walking and a word slipped through my mouth.
“Okay”
“Okay?” she asked confused.
I took a deep breath and asked her.
“¿Do you want to go out sometime this week?”
“Yes” she responded.
We hung out there for hours and talked about everything and laughed and had the best time of our lives. When it was time to go home I said good bye, gave her a kiss in her left cheek softly grazing her lip.
“Good night” I said.
“See you tomorrow” she responded with her cheeks flushed.
