Cienega de Flores, Nuevo Leon, is about 35 km south of Monterrey. It is the typical small town where everybody knows each other, where everybody are family related, the place where people are kind to each other and where you can go to feel relaxed when you get tired of the city. My grandfather was born here and when he was a little boy, he began to work with his brothers helping their father “Cito” in heavy work, like planting wheat, when they arrived home after school. This work was what laid the foundations of the man that he later on became: a hard working, honest, respectful, committed and loving man. As time passed, he grew up and had to leave his small town to come and work in Monterrey, so he could offer a better future for his family and their descendants. After years of hard work, he met a wonderful woman he later on went and marry. Together they formed a beautiful family here in Monterrey, but he never forgot his roots back in Cienega. When he had the chance, he bought a ranch in that little town so he could go back and rebuild his link with his old hometown. He never spoke much about it, but we could all see it in his eye that this ranch was more than just a ranch for my grandfather; it represented the opportunity to gather his family every weekend and create new memories with them. Sometimes there would be times when he remembered his childhood and all the memories that made him the man he was. He never lost an opportunity to gather the whole family there and grill meat and sausages, encouraging us to talk about our experiences and helping us to create stronger bonds with one another. In Cienega he felt like a child again, he reunited with his old friends and siblings who still lived there to talk about the good old times and the better times ahead. This was the place where he seemed happier. Cienega was the place where he forgot about all his city problems, and just marveled at the beauty and simplicity of this small town and life. Now that he is not here, we remember the beautiful memories we made together with him; we remember his love for his family and his constant effort to make all of us happy at that ranch.
