Since my grandfather was born he was attracted by music because my gray grandpa instilled it on him. He started learning the basics of music, all the notes and tempos, the notations and how to interpret them; after some time, he has to choose an instrument, right away the saxophone was his choice. A few years ago I talked with him and ask him the reason of that decision; he gave me a simple answer “because it has a relaxing sound”. The sound of the saxophone make him relax, it gave him calmness. When he understood the sax and how to play it, he joined his father’s band and played in weddings and parties, in bullfights and church events, they played whenever and wherever someone needed good music. When my gray grandpa died, he didn’t want to stop playing the instrument that always accompanied him, so he decided to continue with the band playing two roles at the same time: he become director of the band, and continue to play on it. His saxophone still means good memories of his dad, and keeps being a way to take the stress out. Time being passed, the band disintegrated, and my grandfather was melancholic still wanting to have that in his life. He realized that with his experience he was able teach his grandsons and granddaughters how to play music, so he decided to create a band with us. He accomplished his mission and created the band, and I was part of it. While I was playing in the band I decided also to play the saxophone, and that’s why I can tell you a little bit of how this make him feel. The saxophone means for him fun, sometimes money, but especially it means a way to distract himself from the troubles he could have, in fact, he confess me that when he plays the sax, he forgets everything and just focus on the mixture of sounds he can make. Thanks to the music, and particularly to his saxophone, he had been in many places such as: Orlando Florida, Mexico city, Aguascalientes, Piedras Negras, Saltillo, etc. The most surprising story I know is that he once played and directed with the band for the Pope John Paul II the Cracoviana, from the Popes birth town, and that he went to my grandfather and thanks him for playing that to him. He had met governors and lots of people, and all thanks to the saxophone and the band. This instrument had make him realized the value of life, and had teach him how to enjoy it the best way. Now my grandfather tries to teach us his learning’s so we can success in life.
