My Grandfather´s Cars
I can recall very clearly that on certain Sunday mornings my grandfather would invite all his four daughters families to enjoy a delicious breakfast grandmother had prepared for all of us, we would sit in a very, very long table and divide in two groups, children and adults, after the exquisite breakfast had finished each and every one of us would stand in a line and wash the dishes we used, it was an extremely rare routine but all the parents agreed it was a good idea, none of the children got to vote and it was us that always got to clean up while the adults kept talking about boring adult matters. After we finished washing all the dirty dishes we stood around my grandfather and begged him to take us to the garage where all his seventeen cars were parked in a perfectly ordered fashion. As I can remember because he mentioned it more than a few times, the cars were parked in two lines, the first ones of each line were the oldest ones, whereas the last ones were the newest, which weren´t all that new. The two lines were because of the colors, bright and opaque. All of the automobiles were in perfect condition every three days he would wipe down all the dirt that the car could have, inside and out. I can say without doubt that my grandfather is a very odd person, just as he keeps his cars in order and never moves them, in fact never turns them on, he keeps his papers and documents, always in the same place and in the same order, he will always say that there is where they are supposed to be, were they are meant to be, everything has a purpose and a reason, all of his things have a structure and serve a certain purpose. Order and style are my grandfather’s ideals, you will never see him in an ugly or dirty car, or with worn out shoes everything is clean cut, calculated and forever in place just as his cars. He loves those cars, Oh boy, that Grand Prix, he says to me, isn´t she a beauty? That bright golden paint, that noisy eight cylinder engine, the feel of the white leather seats, I could just live inside that baby. The funny part is he says the same about all of his cars the 1968 light blue Cadillac deVille, the green pine 1961 Ford Falcon. We can talk hours about cars, it´s his love and passion.
