He felt like crying whenever he got near her, though he hadn't always felt that way. Up until the day in the lodge when she took away Sylvan's pain, she had just been a friend of his wife's. But as he watched the glowing plasma flow from Sylvan's back where she had laid a palm there, his longing began, and he wished to be touched by her also. So it was the next week in the same lodge, he chastely chose the spot next to her, respectful of their nudity in such close quarters. The water purified by eucalyptus oil, was poured over the malapai rocks, filling the lodge with aromatic vapor. Prayers began, uttered with reverence to the four directions and the many ancestors. In the confidential fog where secrets are kept hushed by Mother Terra, she laid her palm on his back, sending a shudder through him that burst into his heartspace and the tears flowed torrential. He was not only skin naked then but also bared to the bones naked. When did he last cry... probably not since he was a baby. In a family of 4 brothers he had learned that tears were unmanly.

After that episode his behavior towards her changed. He was very careful when she was in attendance, sure that everyone could see his attraction to her. Where once she had been nothing more than a face in the crowd at community events, now she was the center of the mandala. He didn't know what it was about her that made him feel so vulnerable and indeed he had spent alot of time thinking about it, thinking about her, which he was damn sure he had no business doing. But what of it, there she was, always at the forefront of his mind, everything that was mundane & petty simply faded into the background. Finally it dawned on him at the New Year's Party. It was not just a new year but also a new millenium, changes were upon them all and everyone he knew was in relationship upheaval, including himself. She sat on a couch in the corner, almost as if holding court. He observed the emotionally distraught gravitate to her and leave their tears on her shoulder and the emotionally distant keep well distanced but unable to look away. As the clock struck midnight, it struck him that the reason why he didn't feel the need to hide anything when he was in her presence, and couldn't anyway, was because she didn't have any walls herself, so when you were near her, neither could you. He also realized that he was in love with her and didn't know what to do about it.
