I lost it.
The light disappeared.
Or died out...
Either way I can't catch sight of it any longer.
I keep walking out of fear
Fear that if I stop I'll never start again
Even in the blackest darkness I've been in
I can still see faintly
Still see that a few feet ahead is a pit
A huge void I cannot cross
I shuffle to the edge and peer down into the crag
Nothing.
Nothing to see, nothing to hear.
I focus my gaze as on the opposite side as much as I can
I can see the edge
And I know it's out of jumping distance.
I take off my watch, pointless as it is in this darkness
And drop into the gaping maw
I drop to my knees to listen
Nothing.
A bottomless pit
No chance to clmib down and back up the other side.
I can't quit now, what am I supposed to do?
Then in the corner of my vision
I catch a shape I hadn't noticed before
I can barely make it out
But on the other side of the hole
There's a rope
It's hooked to a link in the wall
And looks as though I could use it to swing across
There's only one dilemma
It's on the other side...
With all the strength inside I holler
"Can anyone hear me?"
My voice echoes down the cavern.
After what seemed like hours
and still no response
I fall to the ground.
And sleep.
