One to the East

and One to the West

Sometimes when you stand very still, happiness will find you...

I try to find the fairies in the garden,

But they fly, when I try.

I try to stand very, very still,

In the garden,

But they hide.

With rusted tomato cages

Pricked into the ground,

Haphazard and awkward,

I stand closed eyed, then open

To surprise them in flight.

But they hide.

Deep in their secrets,

Deep in their places,

That I’ll never find,

They hide.

Like happiness that comes to you

When you don’t really try,

They hide.

I do try, I try.

In the garden, I try.

Crouching in the gladiolus

To find them.

Tangling in the bean pole twine

To hold one.

I try.

I see not one fly.

I see not one fly,

Nor, where they land

Where I cannot see,

Two,

On my shoulder blades,

One to the west and

One on my east.

So,

As I leave the garden,

Unaware of my riders,

They flutter and giggle,

And I wonder,

How long should I have stood

To have happiness find me.
