The Depths [February 23, 2018]

Poetry

On an isolated beach, beneath the crescent
I wade into the water, and begin my descent
Below the surface, far from all I've known
I alone start drowning in penance

Unlocking the cage hidden in my memory
My demons feed freely upon my treachery
Devouring my confession where I reside
My shackles show no remorse against the tide

Only the sightless gloom awaits my eyes
The barren abyss dampens my pleas and cries
My consciousness flickers like a dying bulb
Until another is lit another mile below

Suddenly the water crashes its judgement upon me
And now I comprehend the sentence of the guilty
It crushes me, snatching air from my lungs
The bubbles dissipate blindly with the sun

Jerking and flailing I lie upon the naked shore
I can't remember who I am, or what I was before
With the water to my back I return, a new man
From the trials of the depths, my life began
