My Mother’s Snow Globes

My mother loves having a collection of things, she has books, she has statuettes, she has Christmas decorations all that in a big shed, but her most precious collection is not there, but in a shelf. She adores the crystal balls, those with fake snow inside, snow spheres are called. It started on Christmas, but she then extended this big collection for every season with no reason. No matter the time, no matter the day, a snow sphere you could always find there. From every place she goes, a snow globe in my house shows up. Her friends already know, therefore in every vacation they have, a snow sphere as a gift they buy, and for who can it be? Ask my mom and she will say “me”. Of every color and every size my mom a snow sphere has. Trapped inside a bubble, the tiny figure inside seems to be so fragile, but this one is not afraid of the shaking, because the snowflakes falling are so exciting, that may take you where you can’t even imagine. Maybe there’s a whole city inside, a monument or just a kid otherwise, but no matter what figure it has, each one is special for my mom. Florence, France, England, New York, are just some examples of the places from which she has one of this. All around the house you can find this crystal globes my mother loves, in the kitchen there’s a pair, in the living room and over there, in the stairs and in her room, almost every step you take. She has them as souvenirs and decoration, sometimes even as toys for my cousins, who love shaking them over and over again. My mom’s afraid that they could break them, but she likes seeing the hypnotizing feeling it gives them when they shake them. In every reunion that’s a topic of discussion, they say their colors are enchanting, and that their charm is hard to hide, but what if she believes there’s something else behind. Maybe it brings her back some memories, maybe it melts her heart, but I’m sure there’s an overwhelming emotion at the back of her beloved art. I honestly don’t know. It can be an illusion, or maybe a hope, that one day the white snow will cover this city, and she would enjoy the beautiful view of the white mountains just as in her globes.
