When the lights go out

It was a stormy morning, she kissed her daughter goodbye then she headed to the school. Since they arrived a few days ago to their new house, there were some things that needed to be fixed. Her husband asked her to buy some gadgets and connect some electronic devices. She hated technology, even if his husband was a Software Engineer, she thought that technology is complex and tends to fail. After a couple of hours, the house was cleaner and she was happier because she bought some new appliances she wanted a long time ago. The phone rang and she answered, it was the school’s principal. She was nervous, she didn’t know what was the reason of his call. The principal took a long breath and mentioned the words: “your daughter suffered a car accident”, then, everything turned grey and she lost her voice. It was a serious accident, when she was going out of the school bus a car skidded and hit her; the principal explained that an ambulance was transporting her daughter to the nearest hospital. She grabbed her keys and cellphone and go out running to her car, she was nervous, she was anxious, she wanted to be dream, a nightmare. The thunderstorm and pouring rain made driving almost impossible. She called her husband in the car, she didn’t care about any possible penalties for this action. She told his husband the situation even if her voice wasn’t stable enough. They arrived at the same time and entered running. She went to reception and started screaming: “My little daughter arrived a few minutes ago, she suffered a car accident and we need her location, we need her location!”. The receptionist told them in what room her daughter was and they went out, she asked for more information about her daughter to every person she saw along the way. After a couple of minutes, a doctor arrived and told them that their daughter was very unstable and they needed to act as fast as they could. Then, the doctor said: “Your daughter needs a life or death operation and we are analyzing the possibility that this operation will be made by a specialized medical robot”. After hearing that, she went crazy, she wouldn’t let her daughter’s life depend on such a thing, depend on technology. Her husband grabbed her and tried to calm her down. The doctor said that this robot had performed a lot of operations and the success rate was very high. Time was running out. Her husband took the decision and the operation started. She was shivering, she was a little angry with her husband’s decision but what concerned her the most was the success of the operation. After a couple of hours, she saw the doctor go out of the operation room and she asked him if the operation was going well, the doctor nodded and went straight to the cafeteria to grab some food. Suddenly, they heard a loud thunder and the lights went out. A lot of people started screaming, running and making loud noises. She and her husband screamed for help, they knew that her daughter was in an operation performed by a robot. A lot of pictures came to her head, just imaging her little daughter alone in a middle of a life or death operation made her feel like never before. They rushed to the cafeteria and encountered the doctor running towards them. “I know, I know” said the doctor. And kept running until he entered to the operation room. “95% percent, 95% percent” said her husband. She was in shock and said: “this is your fault, you think technology will always solve everything”. The husband stayed quiet. The lights came back. But there wasn’t information about the situation of their daughter. Then, the doctor appeared, but he seemed depressed, he told them that at the time that the lights went out, the robot was closing the wound so it was open for a couple of minutes and a lot of blood was lost, they needed a blood transplant right away. She offered herself right away after hearing that, but his husband told her that she was too weak for the transplant and he wanted to fix the situation and save their daughter’s life. The doctor took him to the operation room and the transplant was a success. The days passed by and their daughter recovered. They will never forget that moment and she will never forgive technology.
