Since my grandfather was a little boy he has always wear a pair of boots. If it is a normal day he wears the brown or the black ones, and if he feels a little bit fancy he wears the white ones. He always wears his boots with jeans and with square shirts, or polo shirts, or just a t-shirt. Some of his boots are very expensive while other ones are just Christmas gifts. Some of his boots have strange designs, other ones lack of design at all, other ones have Mexican stuff like a picture of a “mezcal”, and he even has a pair of boots with his name at the side. He also likes to add accessories to his boots like spurs, when he occasionally goes to the ranch, or a metal thing that goes at the tip of them. I have never seen him with a pair of normal shoes, tennis, or sandals, because he is always either barefoot or with them boots. Every morning when the sun rises he is already with his boots on. He knows each and every pair so well that he does not even spend more time than the needed in choosing the ones he is going to wear during the day. In the afternoon, after hours and hours of hard work he finally comes back home, but immediately he goes out for a quick walk to visit his friends that live near him. When he enters back to his house he always asks my grandmother to help him take his boots off. I remember him doing almost the same process since I was a young kid. Later in my life I understood that they have a special meaning for him. He told me that when he was small his family didn’t have a lot of money so they all had to go work in the morning even though they were young. He started working caring and cleaning things in a small place and with his first small salary he bought the pair of boots that he always wanted. From that moment he decided that he was going to buy a pair of boots in each important moment in his life. He bought a pair when he opened his small business, and another pair when he expanded it, he bought a pair when he and my grandmother got married, and since then he has bought countless pairs. Something he said surprised me, he told me that the last pair of boots he is going to wear is in the grave when he’s cold and death.
