Just a glimpse of her face
was all I could see
an image in a foreign place
as she looked back at me
I tried to speak
but forgiveness fell silent
my lips would not move
nary a word or uttered sound
sorry we often seek
my voice was mild and meek
could not apply the words
to my lips
and I prayed
that my eyes
would say to hers
"Mother, I'm so sorry"
