ORANGE IN THE END.

In the end, one could not even see ten meters away into any direction, that hard orange dust wouldn’t let them. They knew everything had color once, the sky, nature and everything else, but it seemed they were actors in a black and orange movie, orange by day, black by night. The horizon was completely gone, and the survivors knew that the moon and the sun existed, but only by word and not by proof. They were staying at the time in an abandoned building, in a city once called Denver located in North America. The day was just starting and orange light came through the windows, they all woke up and got ready for today’s usual work. The group of five dogs, three males and two females stared at the door, tired. Everything seemed dull, they’ve been doing this for a while, but survivors didn’t appear just like that. They’ve been doing this for a while, if you could call a short life a while. They knew they couldn’t be out for long, the orange monster caused the early dead of many, but in the end, that wasn’t the issue, no one could have a child anymore. They were maybe looking for a miracle, or mere surviving, no one knew anymore. It was like being on autopilot, you kept going but there was an emptiness one could not scratch.

Just before going out one female dog asked a male dog, “Have you ever seen a human?”

The male dog answered, “Not a real one, I mean, just in pictures and stuff like that…”

“Do you think there’s any left?” asked the female.

“I don’t know, I mean, who knows?” answered the male.

“What happened to them?”

“According to the rumors, they were the first ones to go sterile, long before animals.”

“Do you think they were good?”

“Everyone says they were the ones that brought the orange to Earth.”

“I heard once that they were human’s best friend. That both of our species lived in peace, harmony and love. Why would they do that?”

“I don’t know. It’s hard to tell. Like I told you, no one knowns for sure. What about other species? Or even among themselves? Now, let’s go out.”

“OK”

The male dog didn’t make it back that day. He was the old one, maybe not so old but the oldest, a middle-aged dog. The thing is that the orange stuff was so bad to health, that no one went to grow old and die. They cried his dead, wondering if they were the last dogs on earth.

Hey, Sci-fy

The last dogs standing. No one could remember when the last still born litter was birthed, no one knew what a human looked like. Wow, what a vision, what a place to have a POV. Born of the imagination but not a real stretch. Denver. Hmmmm. :D
