I rise to consciousness, awareness
A darkened plain as far as I can see
Featureless horizon without boundaries
Stretching in all directions
A sky bereft of both star and moon
Neither celestial body nor cosmic landmark
Nothing but perfect, seamless
Velvet, dark, empty and cold
Yet behind this sable curtain
A sentient, an intelligence
The awareness of a cunning mind
That desires only to bring about my fall
A tremor shakes the ground
A low roar, felt more than heard
The firmament trembles
As cracks begin to run like a bird’s shadow
Over the ground
Lined in flame
Roads of fire as ground crumbles beneath my feet
Geysers of liquid, living lava
Erupt all around me
Until I stand surrounded on all sides
My small island of scorching stone
In this heaving, molten sea
And as a burning, sulfurous wind
Whips and tears across this land
A pillar of flame rises above me
Dwarfing me, towering, menacing
And I know its purpose
My destruction
I close my eyes and wait for the end
And a whisper
Infiltrates my silence
And I cannot understand
That single solitary word breathed into my mind
I open one eye
As a cool soft breeze caresses my face
The scent of lily and western wind
Carrying the vapors of the sea
A face replaces my torment
A face nearly beyond description
But I’ll try
First glowing radiant skin
Lit from within by some internal warming sun
Unblemished, perfect
The color of late autumn sky
As afternoon fades to dusk
Beaming with both health and hidden passion
Hiding one of many smiles
Melting even the coldest heart
Especially mine
Eyes like a winter morning
As the first snow frosts the land
Cloudless yet shrouded
And yet deep as ocean’s shadow
Swirls as does the sea
Following winter storm
Lost in these depths I founder
Yet I am anchored still
Of these I dream
One of destruction
One of damnation
One of redemption
One of salvation
And my pendulum swings
Each time I dream…. Of you
