As the old man lay there smiling
At that small and frightened face
He knew his life was over
And it was time to
Leave this place
He knew that he must journey
From the world from which
They know
But a few short words of comfort
Told to her before he goes
He spoke to her of deep blue eyes
Now hidden behind tears
He gently held her trembling hand
To calm her growing fears
He spoke to her of all the things
They did and did’nt do
And hoped that he had made
At least
A few of them
Come true
He spoke to her
Of a angel skin
Where now wrinkles
Take the place
And how they should’nt be there
On such a lovely face
He spoke to her
Of golden hair
That’s now a deepened gray
He cried and then he told her
Its not supposed to be that way
He told her he would be there
And tho he’d not be seen
He would come and visit
And be there in her dreams
And if you feel a gentle breeze
While in a windless place
It’s only me trying to take
The wrinkles from your face
And if you feel a tender warmth
While sitting in our chair
its only me trying to turn
to gold your graying hair
and when I get to heaven
this thing I’ll promise you
I’ll sit beside those pearl white gates
And I will welcome you
