Two weeks ago,
Pains of glass rained from the sky,
Each drop shattering as it met pavement
Leaving splinters to infect the brokenness of Earth.
Shards remain within the citizens
Paralyzing all proper movement.
Feet shuffle and muscles ache;
Eyes remain glued to the ground
Searching for the addiction that enables
The mutancy of their life.
Reaching destinations becomes a challenge;
Journeys once traveled are forgotten.
Broken glimpses of shimmering light
Are all anyone can remember.
One year ago,
Life had been different.
The world revolved around our love.
Smiles were a common greeting
And happiness filled the depths of our hearts.
No talk of handheld promises
Or what the future could hold.
Everything was within our grasp
And easily understood.
One year ago
Came before the sky was sorrowful;
Before secret societies barred the heavenly gates
Permitting the sun to hide.
Windows were places before our souls
Hoping for a better glance inside.
No one could have comprehended
The treacheries of our actions.
Just one false move
And the panes of glass could shatter.
Sometime in the future,
When our mutant lives shall fade,
Will the world remain
Broken and shattered
Or shall she heal her wounds instead?
When our mortal flesh feels
The warmth of the midday sun,
Will we understand that she smiles
Or feel the rays as burning darts of anger?
Perhaps we will not feel at all
As evolution proves
That only the strong survive.
