I see it way too often on the evening news
“Our opening story, another life was taken too soon”
It’s sad when based solely on the color of your skin
Makes it less likely you will see your family again
Why do they bother to equip you with other things
If you’re just going to pull your gun and start firing
I understand fear of the unknown can make things tense
But wasn’t all of your training for situations like this
Now don’t take this wrong, most cops aren’t bad
But neither are most people, whether white or black
So while drawing that gun out of fear of stereotypes
If others did the same to you, would that be right
“Son watch out for the police, they will take your life”
“Here’s some protection, hope you don’t need it tonight”
“But if you see one coming, don’t hesitate to shoot”
“Because if you do, they will be the one to shoot you”
Now we can all agree that mindset would be wrong
Stereotyping is unconscionable, and it doesn’t belong
But with all the bad things that happen every day
It wouldn’t take much for others to think that way
So before you do something you can’t take back
Analyze only the elements of the situation before you attack
So we can avoid another innocent life being taken too soon
You know all tragedies and travesties of justice don’t make the news
