Rabbi

Sir, teach me how that I should live,

   and the standard I should use;

To measure how much of me to give,

   and how much of self to lose.

I look to you to show me how,

   to see and learn what I need to know;

about the One Almighty God,

   Who says He loves us so.

To live a life of pious show,

   or to serve in secret where e’re I go;

To keep the Sabbath with religious zeal,

   or serve the Lord and receive the seal.

To follow old and ancient scrolls,

   or pray to the One Who Knows.

For if one day, I know not when,

   I am to meet Him face to face;

I want to be assured and know,

   that joy will be the case.

So Rabbi, tell me, in your own words,

   of all you’ve seen and heard;

And prepare me for the day I’m called,

   to meet the Living Word.
