The fear of the unknown is very scary. It is especially to children. In addition to being afraid of the unknown, they do not yet have the brain function to know what is real and what is not.
A child I was working with yesterday, believed there was a fox behind a curtain. Despite his dad and my assurances that there was no fox, he refused to get close to the curtain. It was only after he saw for himself that there was nothing there, did he start to relax.
CONCLUSION
Children, like the rest of us, have fears. Unlike the rest of us, their fears may be based on unreal things. We, as parents and caretakers can best help them by first listening. It is key to always listen to children. We want them to know we take them seriously. We want them to know we are concerned about, and care about, them. Then, we can discuss the fear and show them that their fear is unfounded.
