I knew you would be wearing
Red today,
So I did, too.
I walk in, feigning indifference
When,
What I really wanted to do was
To wrap my arms around you
So you would know that
It may be your birthday
But,
I'm the one who's happy.
You are here, near me.
I see the stupid, funny faces
You make when you're bored
Even,
The twinkle in your eyes when
You are about to play a prank, or
tell a joke, or
when you're just being plain silly
And,
I smell your skin when you
Put your arm across my shoulders
And keep me close by your side
While walking home
And,
I feel the warmth of your breath on
My ear, when you whisper my name, on
My cheeks, my lips when
You kiss me lightly
So,
It's only right that I wore red today
Because, in truth
It is I who is celebrating.
To know you, to be this close to you
Is
Perhaps, the best gift
This world has given me
Not on my birthday, or yours, but
On each and every single day that we are together.
