I died driving on the highway,
stirring,
I turned to fix my bent rearview mirror
and saw the world was no longer there
Except the sturdy concrete of the highway.
Crushed into a black, empty space
I saw
No trees
or skies, or
flattened tortoises that wander onto open road
only the long pavement leading me
a thought crossed my mind to say a prayer.
Light and fast footsteps came running from behind me
and waving hands caught my eye,
a young man's voice called, "Stop,
I am here to take you down.
I lead the way.
All the way,
down to you know where."
Unphased, I was dreaming
I knew this
somewhere in my psyche
