The girl is happy with her boyfriend
The friend is also happy with the girl's boyfriend
The girl blissfully talks about him with starry eyes
The friend smiles and listens; silently grinning
The girl thinks all is well
Until her boyfriend always seems busy
Too busy for her
So the girl calls up her friend
The friend apologizes but is too busy as well
Then the girl hears it
Her boyfriend's voice in the background
Her mouth goes dry and the phone
Crashes hard on the ground, breaking apart
Friend assumes the worst, and tries to think of a story
While the girl, in her defensive numb mood
Drives silently to friend's house
Hoping she was mistaken; paranoid
When she gets to friend's house she rings the bell
And to her horror, her boyfriend answers the door
Hurt and betrayed, she turns to leave
She has gotten the answer she came for
He grabs her shoulder, but that is the last straw
How dare he touch her?
Especially after touching her best friend?
She whirls around and punches him
Square in the jaw
She turns and leaves in her car
Driving far, she stops
She collapses upon the grass of a random park
Crying, she ponders her self-worth
What didn't he like about her?
But more importantly
Why did her best friend do such a thing?
Since kindergarten they've always stuck together
Why now?
She knew how happy he made her
Her friend appears in front of her
The girl's gaze hardens
Friend pleads for forgiveness and understanding
She confesses she started it
She says she didn't mean to
Simply shrugging, and staring her friend in the eyes
She asks, "Who are you again?"
And walks past her to her car
The girl drives back home
And stares at her ceiling
Her phone rings and rings
Her doorbell is rang and door knocked
But she continues to stare
'Til they all stop.
Solitude finally.
Just as it began.
Nothing lasts forever.
