I was leaving work and by chance
I had to take a different way home
due to the ramp being closed for
the highway,
Not a big deal,
An inconvenience,
I was driving on the north side,
Nobody goes there,
Nobody wants to live there,
You just kind of end up there,
I drove by a thousand liquor stores,
Cash for gold spots,
Check advance locations,
Discount tobacco dispenseries,
Everything to let you know
that you're not in the lap of luxory,
As I stopped at a traffic light
a couple of black teenagers
crossed the street in front of
my truck,
Normal,
Happens all the time,
But these kids were weathered,
They both looked at me in the eye
the entire time they crossed,
They looked at me like at
any minute I was going to pull
some shady activity,
I've never had someone stare at me
with hate for no reason,
It was eye opening,
I drove off hoping that I would
never become that way,
Cold and calculated,
Uncompromising to situations,
I hoped that I could be like
a traffic light I guess,
When something comes your way,
Change to better accept it and
just let it pass
