I slept with wolves back then
Inside their den
But once at two a.m.
I heard them leave
in a pause that felt unending
I followed those beasts
into the mists we ignore
I picked up my pace
while steadying my feet
Waiting for a gap to close proximity
I watched in awe
As the fluid filled gums
smacked red juice in jaws
devoured bone, soul, and all.
It was a terrible exhibition
I forgot how to live
or what good it was to exist
but all I see now are those jaws
dripping with purpose,
They seemed so certain
