The Selfless

Folder:
Odes/Tributes

Once again,

fate dictates the movements

and very tides of mankind.

Once again,

as innocent victims run from the wreckage,

the selfless run into its midst.

What kind of soul,

leads a being to run, head first,

into such danger?

What inner desire to serve,

propells them forward

into places from which others flee?

Is bravery even in their minds,

or does it just flow naturally

from their veins?

Is thought for themselves,

even a thought for them,

or are all thoughts, for others?

While so many desert the streets,

so many others choose purposely,

the path of harm's way.

While knowing they are out there,

and always at the ready,

I sleep a more safe and soundly rest.

Author's Notes/Comments:

09-04-05-This is dedicated to that special breed of people-the volunteers, the rescuers, the firefighters, the soldiers, the EMTs and EMS wokers, the brave...the selfless, who let no form of danger, nor harm, nor fear, prevent them from their very calling. My own 19 year old son, Joshua, being one of them...and headed to New Orleans to help in Katrina's aftermath.
They are all in my thoughts and prayers...the victims and the selfless heroes.
'BRAVO' to them all...
