They called them rogues
and pirates and bloodthirsty thieves.
The tales told of their ruthlessness
were caused by fear and naive.
Of plundering and murder
and unholy deeds.
Of all the ships they conquered,
of all the men they made bleed.
But tales are just that,
stories made untrue.
They sailed for their country to strike flags of English ships,
and hoist up the Red, White and Blue.
They did nothing illegal as did pirates.
The rules of the battle, they did adhere.
The enemies losses were the gains
of the fearless privateers.
