Brawl with a bear

He bellowed like a rabid bear.

When he was there, the air was stunned stiff. 

I tip-toed through the home that didn't feel like mine.

I popped a pill. I exhaled. 

I prepared to stand my ground, like a lone camper in the wilderness. 

My fight or flight reflexes kicked in, and I wanted to brawl.

I used to feel that way about

I used to feel that way about Boy Scout meetings, where I was routinely bullied for appearing to be "different," and being one of the weaker kids.  The bullies were sometimes as ferocious as bears.
