My grandfather´s slingshot

Prose Poem

My grandfather used to live in Reynosa, Tamaulipas. When someone says Reynosa many People think of it as a problematic city by its current problems, but it’s not, before all the problems with drugs and shootings it was a very nice town and the people (that were from “farm") were very friendly. My grandfather grew up in a weapon environment and one of his favorite weapons was the slingshot, he used it whenever he could; to kill squirrels, pigeons, crows, rabbits and hawks, from time to time to scare a dog, cat or boar. He liked his slingshot so much he learned to make one with wood, using a knife, looking for a piece of wood to resist and a robber band and some pieces of leather. He took the wood and began to carve it with the knife; I remember this because we were there, my cousins and I when he made it, in a way we learn from him. If the wood was shaped my grandfather just carved it to achieve the proper form for the hand and robber bands, if not he carved the wood to achieve a "Y” form and make it suitable for the hands. His favorite weapon was the knife, mostly because he found many ways of uses. After he have sanded the wood and took the form, he take the robbers and joined them with the leather a little larger than the robbers, in the leather you would put the rocks or marbles or anything that would fit there and you could fire, after the robbers and the leather have been attached to each other, my grandfather do his endurance test, taking the robber bands in one hand and with the other hand the leather and stretching them until he felt a distance suitable for the rock to take good speed and hit the target without problem, it's amazing how many times he hit his hands and sometimes his face in this part, my cousins and I laughed a lot when we saw this. Having passed the endurance test of the robber bands, my grandfather took the piece of wood in a "Y" form and tied to the sides in the top the rubbers and leather, Usually it takes several turns and then a bit of glue on the rubber to wrapped it in the wood, the reason is that this pieces does not come loose or broken in this part. When it this was Finished it was time to do the shooting tests . I remember we went to the patio and my grandfather taught us to shoot to bottles and pieces of wood and occasionally one pigeon that crossed the road.
