Scratching
Endless scratching
Soft from the top of the stairs
Standing
On the landing
In the house where evil fares
Staring
Even daring
A carving of a devil's head
While the scratching
Constant scratching
In my heartbeat heightened hearing
Could wake the long since dead
What steady hand
Or maddened man
Could scratch so drastically?
So quietly and constantly
So carefully methodically?
With no listener to care?
The devil taunting
Curled lips wanting
Watching eyes with cobweb haunting
Yet I stand unmoveable
Dependable, unchangeable
Rhythmic scratching unstoppable
The devil smiles my second step
As I'm compelled to climb the stair
