i anticipate the day's adventures
with a bloated belly
full of comforting coffee
and with a hopeful heart
i take courageous steps over the crosswalk
my fingers feeling my fishing rod
i jump soundlessly onto the soft sand
i watch the water whisk around shells
i sigh at the sight of a silver sun
and at the feel of fluid, silky sand
the salty sea slips away
to the giant blue banner of sky
the world is not yet wide awake
i cast my line carefully with concealed delight
the whistling wind hums a sweet lullably
clouds temporarily cover the sun with their cloaks
at the end of the first hour, fish remain unfound
then a morning meal arrives--a warm welcome
after wrestling wind and wave
a fish hits and fights forcefully
its a big one and he brings newfound determination
with only one war won,
we begin to bring our trip to end
i pack up poles with a pout
unfortunately, no fish for me today
