A little whisper of hope, written by Brenda Arreola and Raúl Valdez

A very long time ago there was Mother Duck and her ducklings living on the pond. Mother duck loved her ducklings above all. She had six, five were black and one was white. She didn’t know why, but she loved the white duckling anyway. He was very recognized and loved by the ducklings and the crocodiles in the pond. He was quite kind and happy all the time. They lived in this beautiful pond. The water was always very pure and clean, the sky was always clear and the sun was always shining. Even at night, even with the soft cold breeze, the ducklings enjoyed the view that sky had.  At the other side of the pond, there lived the crocodile family. There were quite different from Mother Duck and her ducklings, because they lived in the older part of the pond. They were wiser and more experienced than the ducks. Mother Crocodile had six baby crocodiles; five of them were yellow while the other one was green. She didn’t like the idea that one of her sons was different. She despised the idea of change, so the poor little crocodile had grown up without the love of his mother. I just want to leave this place the little crocodile told his mother every day. You’re not supposed to be thinking about those things! Aren’t you aware of all the dangers that are outside of the pond? Here, we are safe.

I’m sick of this place he said to himself every night.

So one night, the little crocodile decided to leave his side of the pond, in search of something that would make him feel better.

He had known, from a while ago, the story of the white duckling from the other side of the pond. He envied him for having everything that he didn’t had, despite he was different just as him. So he had a plan.

Little crocodile slipped into the little duckling’s side of the pond, nobody saw him. He came into the duckling’s bed. He looked so calm; he actually looked happy, with that half smile that represented him.

Are you happy little duckling? He whispered to the little duckling.

Aren’t you tired of just the crocodiles and the ducklings? Don’t you ever wonder who else is living outside the pond? We could change that. Let’s convince everyone about it.

The crocodile left, while the duckling was still asleep.

The next day, there was something going on. The sky was quite dark, like if a thunderstorm was about to begin. It was quite strange, it had never happened to the animals that lived in that pond.

Both the crocodiles and the ducklings gathered together in the middle of the pond. They didn’t knew what to do. Mother crocodile was very confused, she had never seen the sun hidden behind those big black clouds, and Mother Duckling was quite scared for her little ducklings.

We should leave. The little crocodile said. Here’s not safe. You know, some other animals have this tribe in which we could stay, it’s not that far away.

There was a silence between the crocodiles and the ducklings.

Are you crazy? What if we get lost? Mother Duckling said.

I’m tired of those crazy thinking, son. Mother Crocodile said.

A little whisper came from the back of the row in which the little ducklings were standing.

He’s right. The little duckling said. We’re not safe here. I do believe that maybe something is going to happen.

Rain begin to fall from the sky. Wind started to blew harder and harder. The flowers of the pond started to vanish with the wind, the fish. Birds from far away were even flying near the pond, wanting to find somewhere to hide.

Mother crocodile and Mother duckling looked at each other. They decided that they were going to follow what the little crocodile said. He felt quite important, because for the first time ever finally someone listened to what he had to said. He thanked the little duckling for the help, and they lived to the tribe which was safe enough for them.
