The Philantropist

Philantropist he is and Socialite,
In love with "general” humanity,
He writes out checks - amounts just fair and right.
In careful distant generosity.

He likes his colleagues and his friends to meet,
Is buyoant amongst his outfit's brass,
But knows them not in the concrete
As his concern goes to the global mass.

He loves humanity - in the abstract.
For individuals encroach on privacy.
Lack in discretion sensitive and tact.
And vexing so is crass proximity..

He loves the church and gladly will renew
Those nuisance pledges asked for here below,.
But hates the fellow sitting in his pew,
Who smells of garlic and has eaten crow.

His love - is "general"- and he will hug
The absent masses that will never mar
His property as does the worthless thug ,
And feckless lump of the "partcular".

Who may demand his living room to share,
Louse up his kitchen and the new-set stove,
And check the content of his frigidaire,
And out the window flies sweet Christian Love.

He loves the forest, but he hates its trees,
With branches reaching out for nourishment,
His love resents those close-by entities,
that manifest and threaten turf and land.

"In general"- he loves all humankind,
But keeps at bay the lump "particular",
That in its stubbornness may seek to bind
The distant “Do-Ye-Good" ambassador.

But Jesus came and saw the endless stream
Of humankind and rippling waves thereof
And took the Whole and Unique onto Him
To cover both with His enduring love.
