The Jesuits
I traveled far, I traveled far and wide,
I lived each minute, sorrow or delight
As life requested,- west, east, south or north
But when by ill-luck struck, prompt help came forth.
I had the fortune to well hone my wit
I every town I dwelt, - some Jesuit
Did lend a hand my Einstein to increase
I was found out - with mutual memories.
Of days gone by,- they spoke “remember her?
From Salzburg, Montreal, and Mount St. Claire,
From Winnipeg, Vancouver, Calgary?
They did remember well, -Oh lucky me!
By far too long would be a narrative,
To tell what the good Padres did achieve:
The war concluded, chaos, miseries,
Held sway - their chapel was an isle of peace
So very few there are that can impart
A knowledge that delights the hungry heart,
Together with profoundest sympathy
And understanding’s sharp acuity.
Their teaching solid, vigorous though stern
Helped eager pupils needed lessons learn,
And profit for a life time and beyond,
And knowledge shared makes for a lasting bond.
Whenever I was trodden down and beat,
I met -to help me out- a Jesuit
And predicate their cherished ideogram
AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM!
